Kamei Nammyeong, a Japanese scholar, highly emulates the ancient Chinese saint Kings, regarding The Analects as Confucius' theoretic works and the Six ClassicBook as records of ancient Saint Kings' great achievements. Since ZuoZhuan, or The Zuo Commentary on The Spring and Autumn Annals, was written in a time closest to Confucius', it was considered the most important book in the interpretation of Confucius' works. In his attempt to get to the purest Confucianism, Kamei Nammyeong traced back to the context of ZuoZhuan and the Spring and Autumn Annals, examining the wording and explanation of historical events while excluding the interpretation or annotation of the Spring and Autumn Annals by Mencius, Du-yu as well as scholars in the Hand and Sung Dynasty. This project will try to explore Nammyeong's work, Exegesis on ZuoZhuan and The Spring and Autumn Annals, focusing on the records on Duke Yin, Huan and Zhuang. In order to best understand Nammyeong's idea and practice of the interpretation of the Classic, it will analyze his explanation on the Exegesis on ZuoZhuan as reference materials. What is the essence of Confucianism? How can we best interpret Confucius' thoughts? Hopefully, this result of this study will prove helpful to modern Chinese studies on ancient Classics in the future.
