The implementation of targeted temperature management in critically illness is increasingly in recent years. Intriguingly, there were studies against the hypothermia especially lowering to 33℃ in specific occasions. This dilemma still cannot be resolve in a short period of time. Tracing back our human medical history, we can found that there were many manuscript had been described the use cold therapy or even manipulate of body temperature for the treatment of diversity of diseases. This history spanned over thousands of year, from Egyptian period to 21st century. In this narrative review, it will be describing the evolution of the medical use of temperature control for different therapeutic purposes. Hopefully, this can provide us a new vision in the issues of temperature management for the critical illness.
