In this paper, an investigation is conducted of the ground-borne vibration problem induced by trains moving in underground tunnels. The numerical procedure adopted here is called the coupled finite/infinite element method. With this approach, a soil-structure system is divided into two regions as the near and far fields. The near field is simulated by the finite elements as conventional, and the far field covering the soils with infinite boundary by the infinite elements. It is concluded that the tunnel structure, which is harder than the surrounding soils for most practical situations, will induce a resonance frequency greater than the primary frequency of the soil stratum, which can be clearly observed at the point inside the tunnel.
