競技游泳運動水平也不斷的提高，今日運動競賽日趨激烈，勝負往往只在毫秒之內，在短時間的運動項目中，從刺激到反應所佔時間極短，因此這類快速的運動項目中，運動員的反應時間是非常重要的決定因素，本文收集2011年全國運動會主辦單位競賽組提供之所有游泳項目預賽與決賽的出發反應時間，有效樣本共計927筆，加以歸納與分析，研究結果發現，2011年全國運動會競技游泳項目的出發反應時間，男子組整體出發反應時間明顯優於高中女子組，並且，參加動作頻率和速度越快項目的游泳選手，出發反應時間也越快，反之，參加頻率和速度越慢項目的選手，出發反應時間相對較慢，另外，接力項目第1棒出發反應時間明顯較慢於其他3棒。
