This study aims to explore the impact of psychological stress on sleep quality among university students and analyze the moderating effect of physical activity on the relationship between psychological stress and sleep quality. The research utilized a questionnaire survey method, targeting students enrolled in a certain technological university in Central Taiwan during the academic year 111. A total of 703 valid questionnaires were collected, with a response rate of 87.9%. The data were analyzed using SPSS for statistical analysis. The results of the study indicate that the majority of university students perform well in terms of psychological stress and sleep quality, but there is room for improvement in physical activity participation. When analyzing the influence of different background variables on these factors, factors such as gender, working hours, and college affiliation had relatively limited effects on psychological stress, sleep quality, and physical activity participation. The primary source of psychological stress for university students was found to be academic-related, and psychological stress had a significant negative impact on sleep quality (p<.05). Therefore, enhancing the mental health of university students may be a crucial pathway to improve their sleep quality. Furthermore, the study results show that physical activity participation did not have a significant positive impact on sleep quality (p>.05), and its moderating effect was not significant after considering other background variables (p>.05). In other words, the relationship between psychological stress and sleep quality did not significantly change based on the level of physical activity participation. This suggests that while physical activity has a positive impact on sleep quality, its relieving effect on psychological stress was not pronounced in this study. The study recommends that educational institutions should strengthen mental health education for university students, providing effective stress management courses and services to help students cope better with academic and life pressures. Additionally, encouraging active participation in various sports and physical activities should be promoted to enhance the overall well-being of university students.
