Previous studies of Mandarin tone performance by prelingually deafened cochlear implant (CI) users contained identification and production results from subjects aged below three years old or with only months of device experience. This study revisited this dual topic with twelve CI users, aged 7 to 15 years, at an average postoperative period of six years. In the identification experiment, participants completed a 2-Alternative Forced Choice (2AFC) picture identification task in which they identified the four Mandarin contrastive tones of 60 monosyllabic Chinese words under 12 picture-pairing conditions. All the words were pre-recorded in conversational styles. Scores were given only to words that were identified correctly in both trials. In the production experiment, the same 60 words used in the identification experiment were elicited and recorded from each of the above CI users and the tone of each word was judged by 20 normal hearing adults in a 4AFC identification task. The group mean identification score was 58%, compared to 67-73% as previously reported with a 50% response chance level. Identification of tones 2 and 4 was found to vary significantly with the picture-pairing condition. The group mean production score was 67%, compared to 47-53% as previously reported. Individual tone score rankings and tone confusion patterns were inconsistent with results from computerized investigations, while similar to those from a study using a 5-point evaluation that only tested school-aged subjects. The results suggest that tonal performance of the pediatric CI users may vary with the age range, CI experience and test reliability. Individual identification and production scores were highly correlated. The less than satisfactory performance levels in both measures also revealed special needs for auditory training even among the CI users with extended device experience.
