設計是藝術的創意思維，而藝術是人類文化活動與追求生命價值的體現，透過建築、雕刻、工藝、繪畫等可反映人類文化發展的歷程與生命價值的追求。儘管創作的形式不同、目的各異，但卻可反映出其歷經千百年所積累的文化影響。 在本文中，以漢字爲研究主體，探討漢字設計內涵對傳統民俗工藝的影響，以及在其應用表現下所傳達的設計意象。透過了工藝作品的介紹，輔以文獻的蒐集與分析，除瞭解中國設計哲學及其內涵外，另一方面也剖析漢字在傳統民俗工藝作品中，所展現出的文化意義與在設計表現上呈現的視覺印象。 漢字的設計思潮，是對傳統文化認同感的追尋；經由漢字文化所呈現之設計內涵，著重在精神層面而非表象。就從認同自己文化開始，體認中國傳統藝術的設計精神，將之發揚光大，並真正紮根中國設計內涵，作爲立足於多元文化世界村的根本，這也是設計文化的真正價值。

Designing is the creative thought of arts while arts is the expression of human cultural activities and life value. Through architectures, sculpture, handicraft and painting, the process of human cultural development and the pursuit of life value can be reflected. Even due to different forms of creation and different purposes, thousand year accumulated cultural influences can be shown. In this text, Chinese characters are the principle topic of research. How the designing of Chinese characters influence the traditional folk handicraft is and how to convey the designing image under its functions are discussed. Through the introduction of the works of handicrafts plus with the collection of references and analysis, apart from understanding Chinese designing philosophy and the meaning, Chinese characters are analyzed among those traditional folk handicraft works to reveal the cultural meaning and the visual images in terms of the designing. The designing idea of Chinese character is to search the traditional cultural identity. Through the designing content revealed by the culture of Chinese characters, more spiritual sides are stressed than just the superficial images. Starting from the recognition of our own cultures and the experience of the designing spirit of Chinese traditional arts, they should be spread out and be rooted truly in the Chinese designing contents as the rooting base of multi-cultural world. This is also the true value of designing culture.
