本文採用文獻探討的研究方法，分析美國團體治療的發展史，發現經濟和戰爭是促進美國團體治療發展的重要力道（force）。因此，從歷史縱觀美國團體治療的發展史可以劃分為二十世紀初、一次世界大戰後、三十年代的經濟大蕭條、二次世界大戰後、越戰後，以及2010年代的經濟衰退等六個不同時代，受到經濟或戰爭或兩者兼具的影響，為因應滿足社會和人們心理核心需求，促使團體治療發展出不同的理論與模式，以及影響團體治療模式的興衰狀況，藉此反觀與檢視台灣從過去的1970年代到現在的團體治療發展與演進情形，並發現未來有待努力的相關議題，以及指出台灣晚近社會和人們需求的特殊現象，期盼可以引起注意，以集思廣益和預測未來台灣團體治療方法的發展趨勢，俾便團體治療可以作為滿足當前和未來社會和人們心理核心需求的工具。
