心理治療初談對增進個案的來談動機是關鍵的時刻，若能提升來談者的晤談動機將有助於提升後續心理治療工作的成效。國內外學者在談論缺乏動機來談者的特性，將其以諮商歷程、互動型態、來談者等為主體，分別用抗拒觀、誤解與溝通、非自願性個案與社會變項等面向來描述之。本研究根據Wolberg（2013）提出的八個初談歷程要點與說明，作為激勵缺乏動機來談者的方針，更整理出治療者與來談者在各階段不同的知、情、意、行等四面向的能力指標，最先階段，治療者先展現情緒同理的能力，幫助來談者進行認知層面的學習；第二階段是治療者與來談者共同激勵動機；第三階段為治療者認知層面工作，協助來談者改變實踐；第四階段是治療者展現出關係實踐，讓來談者在經歷改變時可能再次出現的情緒反應獲得覺察、紓解，並增強動機、維持改變。
