Purpose: This study is to investigate the key qualities of secondary school principals in campus crisis management and identify how different combinations of personality traits and decision-making styles influence principals' crisis management effectiveness. Design/methodology/approach: The study employed a Decision Tree Algorithm (or Classification and Regression Trees, CART) method and involved 486 secondary school teachers in New Taipei City to evaluate the characteristics of the school principals and their effectiveness in managing campus crises. Findings: The results show that principals can be grouped into seven categories based on their levels of crisis management effectiveness, which correlates with their personality traits and decision-making styles. The most effective principals demonstrated high scores in conscientiousness, agreeableness, and a behavioral decision-making style. Practical implications: These findings suggest that identifying and possibly training principals in specific personality traits and decision-making styles can significantly enhance their effectiveness in crisis management. Schools might consider these traits and styles when hiring or developing training programs for school leaders. Originality/value: This study adds to the existing literature by using a sophisticated data analysis technique (CART) to categorically differentiate the effectiveness of school principals in crisis management in Taiwan, based on their personality and decision-making styles. |
