徐文琴對《西廂記》插圖的研究，走了一條相當獨特的道路，她從明代景德鎮瓷器上的《西廂記》繪畫的欣賞開始，通過尋訪這些繪畫的藍本（母本），發現了明刊本《西廂記》的插圖這一前人重視不夠的寶藏。 徐文琴二十多年來先後發表了《東方古代文物》（博士論文）等一大批論文，尤以〈「童心」、「情識」、「幻夢」－晚明《西廂記》版畫插圖的演變及其思維探討〉一文的學術價值為古典戲曲界、工藝美術界所關注。 此文全面評價了《李卓吾先生批評北西廂記》等七種現存影響最廣泛的晚明時期《西廂記》版畫插圖，考證其作者、刻工，研究其藝術特徵，尤其注意到了其中蘊藏的人文主義的思想內涵。對彼此之間的相互關係也作了多方面的探索。這一工作填補了前人留下的巨大空白。

Hsu Wen-chyn' study on the illustrations of Romance of the West Chamber is unique. Her study starts from appreciating paintings of Romance of the West Chamber on Jingdezhen porcelain and through looking for the original scripts of these porcelain paintings she discovered the precious illustrations of the Ming dynasty edition Romance of the West Chamber long neglected by predecessors. Hsu Wen-chyn has published a large amount of articles over the past twenty years, including ”The Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities” (a doctoral dissertation). The academic value of her thesis of ”Childishness, Affection, and Fantasy-an investigation on the evolution and thought of engraving illustrations of Romance of West Chamber in late Ming” especially generates attentions from the fields of classical Chinese opera and craft arts. This paper comprehensively evaluates seven kinds of engraving illustrations of most comprehensive influences in Romance of the West Chamber in late Ming proposed in Li Cho-wu's Comments on Northern West Chamber. It also investigates the author, artistic carving, and the artistic characteristics of the illustrations. It observes the insights of humanistic thoughts hidden inside, and examines many aspects of the mutual relationship between them, which offset the huge blank left by the predecessors.
