Most discussion of indigenous people's literature has looked at collected editions of literary works and has deliberately overlooked the accounts of persons involved in indigenous people's movements, such as the rectification of names, the return of land, opposition to child prostitution and protests against the legend of Wu Feng. In fact the indigenous people who led these movements are the pioneers of their people and the first to draw attention to the negative factors facing indigenous people. Given the difficulties of their struggles it was difficult to keep a record in literary writing but with their people marginalized and neglected, it demanded great courage and respect to point out to the rulers and majority society the injustice shown to indigenous peoples and to fight for their rights. Whether form or content is more important is a topic that literature constantly discusses, but for those active in the indigenous people's movements it was more important to use language to effect change than to worry about literary elegance. |
