This paper puts forward a perspective on Aboriginal education in Canada based on an understanding of the Treaty Right to Education. First Nations in Canada, specifically those of us in Saskatchewan are, for the most part, Treaty people. Treaties are binding agreements between two or more sovereign nations. Treaties were negotiated between the First Nations and the Crown of England through the Government of Canada in which First Nations opened up the land for settlement, thereby creating Canada as a nation in exchange for certain rights and benefits. The First Nations objectives in Treaty making in Canada provides a context for interpreting the nature of the Treaty Right and the inherent authority in Education. |
