五千年前台灣南島民族就已有人工栽培的稻米跟小米了。到米的傳程從未間斷過，並且見於各種族群的語言。然而小米在時間跟空間上都較受侷限。台南科學園區13個遺址考古出土的稻米跟小米的數量列表做比較，其他地區出土稻米之主要遺址也列表說明。此外，有關稻米跟小米的同源詞，凡是見於各種台灣南島語言的，也都有列舉出來。

Both linguistic and archaeological evidence indicates that rice and millet were domesticated plants available to Proto-Austronesian speakers in Taiwan about 5,000 years ago or earlier. Cultivation of rice is wide-spread among all the Formosan natives and has an uninterrupted history, whereas cultivation of millet is much more restricted in both time and location. The amount of rice and millet in 13 archaeological sites in Tainan, and rice excavated in the other parts of Taiwan are shown in tables. Austronesian cognates for rice and millet are also given in a list.
