The lecture will in three main sections. In the first, the basic ideas which lie behind task-based language teaching will be presented, and criticised. In the second part of the paper, the position will be adopted that any insights into language teaching have to be based on insights into language learning. Therefore, some aspects of second language acquisition research will be presented, and linked with task-based research. In the third section of the lecture, some different types of learner task will be offered, which may be of interest both from an acquisitional, and also from a pedagogical perspective. A brief summary concludes this written exposition.
