WSN (wireless sensor networks) is a computer network consisting of distributed sensors to detect and observe events. A sink receives data from sensors and acts by performing some management functions. Recently, the multimedia WSN paradigm is envisioned to be an integral part of our daily lives. In WSN, nodes are resource-constrained. It needs energy-aware processing and communication technologies. On the other hand, multimedia applications deal with media (video, audio, etc.) streaming. It introduces special challenges such as real time requirements and playback delay bounds. In this paper, we base on energy-aware DSC (distributed source coding) and error-resilient intra-frame coding to introduce the FSEI (Fixed-Scene Error-Insensitive) coding method for light-weight media compression. Then, the PST (pipeline slot transceiver) schedule method and the EOTS (Energy-aware On-line Traffic Smoothing) method are proposed to meet energy and latency constraints of real-time media transmission on WSN. The improvement of system lifetime is over 50% when comparing to the method [106] proposed in 2008. Moreover, the proposed placement and routing model is easier to guarantee the coverage of the sensing area.
