Taurine has many physiological functions in the central nervous system (CNS) such as maintaining the structural integrity of the membrane, in regulating calcium binding and transport, as an osmolyte, as a neurotransmitter and neuromodulator. Taurine also can serve as a trophic factor in the development of the CNS and a neuroprotective agent in glutamate-induced neuronal injury and H2O2-induced cell injury in PC12 cell cultures. In this review, we will describe taurine's multiple-faceted role in the CNS. Particular attention is paid to the most current developments regarding to the modes of taurine function in developing and adult brains and the related neuroprotective mechanisms of taurine's actions in the CNS.
