The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes of muscle damage index during half marathon (21km) run at high altitude and sea level (3180 m and 280 m, respectively). 12 well-trained runners (age of 41.8±9.2 yr, height of 167.8±5.6 cm and weight of 62.2±6.4 kg) were recruited for this study. Blood samples were collected at 1 hour before and immediately after competition. Creatine-kinase (CK) and lactate dehydrase (LDH) activity were measured by KODAK 500. Using paired t-test for comparing before and after exercise on CK and LDH activities at different altitudes by SPSS. The result demonstrated that time for completing halfmarathon running 【122.1±15.9 min (2.9±0.4 m/sec) vs.98.3±11.4 min (3.6±0.4 m/sec)】 was no significant difference in two races. No statistically significant differences were observed in CK activity between two races (29.9±9.9% vs. 46.4±42.8%). However, LDH activities were significantly increased in sea level race (8.3±5.7% vs. 39.3±14.4%). Studies have shown that high altitude-induced hypoxia would promote muscle damage. But in present study, we did not observed the significant difference on muscle damage between high altitude and sea level. This may be subjects not adaptated to the environment well.
