"Absurdity" is the main keyword in the discussions of Huang, Li-Chun's novels. Most readers state that her writing style is characterized with the use of absurdity and pessimism. She is therefore called "Gentle Sisyphus." However, most of the readers do not discuss its implicit philosophical issues. Sisyphus is the embodiment of the tragic destiny from Greek mythology. He is forced to be engaged in the endless and futile task. Nevertheless, Albert Camus refuted this viewpoint about Sisyphus in his book "The Myth of Sisyphus." This book inspired people to contemplate the meaning of life. Meanwhile, Camus transformed Sisyphus into an incarnation of self-awakening and defying fate. Huang, Li-Chun graduated from the philosophy department and that might have an effect on her writings. In her novels, the sorrow of life appears continually which is like Sisyphus's rolling the rock. In this study, the researcher intends to analyze the absurd ideas through characteristic form and storyline. In addition, the researcher expects to find out the self-awakening hidden under the roles so that it helps readers to discover the gentleness in her writings.
