In the past few years, with the popularity of the road running activities in Taiwan, it has been a trend for road running. There have been many studies about junior high school teachers' participation of sports, but only few studies were about any particular sports, especially about road running activities. This study aimed to investigate the participation motives and the hindrance for the junior high school teachers in Kaohsiung City to join the road running activities and compared the differences among teachers with various personal backgrounds. Quantitative research method and questionnaires were used as tools in the study. The content of the questionnaires included personal information, a participation motive scale and a hindrance scale for road running activities. The objects of the survey were the full-time school teachers in the public junior high schools in Kaohsiung City in 2016. In total, 510 questionnaires were sent out and 438 valid questionnaires were gathered back. The effective response rate was 85.9%. The data was analyzed with descriptive statistics, independent samples t -test, one-way analysis of variance and Scheffe's method and the findings were as following. 1. The top participation motive for junior high school teachers to join road running activities was the concern of health and fitness which was followed by the factors of social relationship, and a sense of achievement; the last concerned one was the pursuit of knowledge. 2. The top hindrance factor for junior high school teachers to join road running activities was the hindrance in the exercise environment which was followed by the hindrance from careers, from personal factors, and the lack of partners or information; the last concerned one was the economic reasons. 3. The participation motives of junior high school teachers with different road running experiences reveal statistical significance. 4. The hindrance factors of junior high school teachers with their different sexes, seniorities, marital status, and road running experiences all reveal statistical significance.
