Purpose: This study investigates the effects of pre-exercise branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation on exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) and performance following high-intensity repeated sprints. Methods: Ten healthy, regularly exercising men (age: 23.2 ± 1.5 years) participated in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were supplemented with either 9.6g/day of BCAA or a placebo (PLA) capsule for three days prior to and on the day before exercise. Following supplementation, participants performed 15 sets of 30m repeated sprints to induce EIMD. Delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), creatine kinase (CK), maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC), and 30m sprint time were measured at pre-supplementation (pre), 24 hours post-exercise (24 h), and 48 hours post-exercise (48 h). Data were analyzed using a mixed-design two-way ANOVA and post hoc comparisons were conducted using the LSD method with a significance level of p = .05. Results: There were no significant interaction effects between experimental conditions and time for any dependent variables. Main effects of the experimental condition were not significant, while the main effects of time showed significant differences. Post hoc analysis revealed that DOMS and CK were significantly higher at 24 h and 48 h compared to pre, MVIC was significantly lower at 24 h and 48 h compared to pre, and 30m sprint time was significantly higher at 24 h compared to pre. Conclusion: Pre-exercise supplementation with BCAA (9.6g/day) for three days and prior to exercise did not significantly reduce muscle damage markers or performance loss induced by repeated sprints. |
