Kinmen boasts an immensely rich battlefield culture, in which military post offices played an indispensable role in the confrontation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. This study outlines the changes, controversies, and comparisons concerning the military post offices in Kinmen through field surveys, in-depth interviews, and comparative research methods. Data were collected and investigations were conducted from August 1 to September 15, 2021. The study covered three islands; namely, Kinmen, Lieyu, and Dadan Islands (the latter two belong to Little Kinmen). We attempt to outline the changes, controversies, and comparisons of the Kinmen Military Post Office. According to the results of this study, the earliest military post offices established were the Shanwai Military Post Office located on Kinmen Island and the 51st Military Post Office located on Little Kinmen, both of which were set up on December 25, 1956. Over the course of the three commanders' services, seven military post offices were established, among which Commander Liu An-chi founded three (Xiaojing, Liaoluo, and Dingbao Post Offices), accounting for the greatest number. Additionally, controversy existed as to Shamei and Lieyu Military Post Offices, as workers of local culture and history concluded from their research that the Lieyu Military Post Office No. 1 established in December 1956 was Kinmen Post Office Branch No. 1, and not Shamei Military Post Office No. 1. Given that the former also contained "No. 1" in its name, misplacement was likely to occur; however, the post offices under discussion were located on two different islands. Regarding the controversy over the Jincheng Military Post Office, given the erroneous location of establishment, it was highly likely to share similarities with the Shamei Post Office Branch No. 1 in nature, as a privately-owned post office. Finally, through a comparison of the seven military post offices, the chronological order of their establishment was found as follows: Shanwai, Little Kinmen, Yangzhai, Liuluo, Xiaojing, Dingbao, and Dadan; furthermore, the chronological order of their termination was found as follows: Liuluo, Xiaojing, Dingbao, Little Kinmen, Yangzhai, Dadan, and Shanwai. Notably, the Shanwai Post Office was the earliest military post office established and the last terminated. |
