戰國名士鄒衍於齊宣王時得勢，政治地位非其他諸子可比。然秦漢之後，著作散逸，後人無由考其學說之全豹。其生平與學術相關資料可徵於文獻者有三：一是《史記．孟荀列傳》述及鄒子之文段，存在字句詮釋及年代考證的問題，需加以董理；二是《鹽鐵論．論鄒》集中討論鄒衍「大九州」說，從中可看出西漢士人對此說之評價；三是《漢書．藝文志》錄有鄒衍一派書目，可考見其著作之流衍。其他散見各書的評述資料另立一節，依文獻時代條列輯錄。

Zōu Yǎn, a famous scholar in the Warring States Period, became influential during the reign of Qí Xuān-wán, and his political status was unmatched by other scholars. However, after the Qín & Hàn Dynasties, his works were scattered and ultimately lost, and later generations had no way to examine the entirety of his theories. There are three documents for which relevant information about his life and academics can be collected: First, some paragraphs in the 'Shǐ Jì - Collected Biographies of Mencius and Xún-zi' mentiones Zōu Yǎn, but there are problems with word interpretation and chronological verification, which need to be put researches in order and clarified. Second, 'Discourses on Salt and Iron - Discoursing on Zōu Yǎn' focuses on Zōu Yǎn's 'Dà Jiǔ Zhōu', from which we can see the evaluation of this theory by scholars in the Western Hàn Dynasty. Third, 'Hàn Shū - Yì Wén Zhì' records the bibliography of Zōu Yǎn's school, which can be used to examine the spread of his works. Other commentary materials scattered in various books are set up in a separate section and compiled according to the era of the documents.
