As technology advances at a rapid pace, smartphones have become indispensable in our daily lives. A considerable number of people with visual impairments also own smartphones. However, their distinctive needs are frequently disregarded in smartphone design, resulting in various barriers in their smartphone usage. To begin to address this issue, this study aimed to investigate the satisfaction levels regarding smartphone functions and the impact on daily activities from the perspective of people with visual impairments. A questionnaire survey involving 128 participants aged between 18 and 65 years with visual impairments was conducted. The results revealed that, concerning smartphone functions, participants reported relatively high satisfaction with screen size, operating system and internet connectivity. However, the global positioning system accuracy received the lowest satisfaction rating. Regarding daily activity implications, satisfaction was comparatively high for communication, reminders, and audiovisual entertainment, but comparatively low for navigation, food ordering, and shopping. Several factors were identified as influencing satisfaction ratings. Gender, age, the use of screen reader software, as well as adjustments in screen brightness and color contrast were significant factors affecting satisfaction with smartphone functions. Disability level, age of onset, outdoor independence ability, and the use of screen reader software were found to be important factors influencing satisfaction with the implications of daily activities. Based on these findings, recommendations have been provided for smartphone development teams and visual impairment services to enhance the independence and user experience of people with visual impairments when using smartphones. |
