In response to climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as the goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions, various agencies in Taiwan have begun inventorying carbon-storing land areas and developing technical methods. Considering that soil classification is based on soil morphology, suggesting that soil series within the same classification group share similar soil properties and carbon stock levels, the study presented used data from the Ministry of the Environment's survey of representative soil series spanning from 2013 to 2021. To calculate the carbon stock, we initially determined the carbon stock per unit area of the surveyed soil series, and then standardized the results into consistent intervals based on soil depth. By multiplying these standardized results by the area occupied by each soil order in Taiwan's flatlands, the total carbon stock of flatland soils in Taiwan is estimated to be 47.54 Tg (Tg = 10^(12) g). Entisols and Inceptisols make the most significant contributions, accounting for approximately 41.19 Tg, or 86.7% of the total carbon stock, and are widely distributed in Taiwan, followed by Ultisols (8.48%), Alfisols (2.86%), Oxisols (1.50%), and Mollisols (0.51%). Finally, Vertisols, with the smallest distribution area, accounted for less than 0.01% of the total carbon stock. |
