Application of Information Technology for Tele-medicine in Health Care for the Elderly

In response to the advent of an aging society, application of information technology for tele-care has become the trend in elderly care services. Since the science and technology begin with the concept of humanity, how does one apply the innovative information technology, provide personalized service, and the technology-driven services to the lives of the elderly, and thus assist in their health management and health promotion? This is an important issue in implementation of tele-care in elderly care services. Because their physical function and psychological needs are unique for the elderly, if their needs and demand are not met, even the best available equipment and technology innovation service will not manifest efficient usages. Since nurses are key players to provide medical care and coordination of resources, it is important to educate nurses to be familiar with the implementation of tele-care, hence play a key role in providing humane care of elderly. In this paper, Watson caring theory is used to illustrate that the attention should be given to the user needs in the development of information technology. It is expected that this article can be used as an important reference for future medical professionals in providing tele-care, and that both the technological innovation and personalized services be taken into account.
