高麗王朝太祖王建面對國內政權紊亂衝突，與其父在弓裔陣營中，因文武雙全，戰功彪炳而逐漸鑽露頭角，形成另一強勢陣營。崛起後的太祖王建統一了後三國，即高句麗、統一新羅、百濟而建立新興國家，國號高麗王朝。「高麗」一詞，有如渤海國始祖大祚榮立志繼承高句麗精神一般，亦為延續高句麗的傳統精神，是為高麗王朝的建國始祖。太祖王建具備高度道德，致力於開啟善良而賢能的政治，在內政方面，主張南方的融合政策，與北方的北進政策，以達成其早年既定的志向，即民族與國家的統一目標。同時，在國際方面，也計畫加強與周邊東亞國家民族的對外關係，例如：渤海國、中國、女真、契丹、日本等東亞地區，使得東亞形勢又出現新局面。
