The purpose of this study aims at exploring how Chinese songs could be utilized to enhance technological university students' motivation for learning the five basic sentence patterns in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) setting. Fifty sophomores from a technological university in northern Taiwan participated in this study. They were first asked to choose their own partners, forming groups of three to five members. Then each group was told to translate in parts one or two self-selected Chinese popular songs and to report their reflections individually about the group project to the researcher at the end of the semester. The researcher also demonstrated the five sentence patterns by translating a number of Chinese songs into plain English. The results showed that most participants enjoyed the group project a great deal and found it helpful in improving their learning of the five basic sentence patterns. However, several problems were also observed from the data collected, including language barriers, the arrangement of meeting time, group members' attitudes, and so forth. Some pedagogical implications and suggestions were presented in conclusion.
