從1865年起算,西洋基督新教音樂傳來臺灣,已有140年歷史,這期間的新教音樂,也從早期以英美聖詩爲主體,到現在有以東南亞各國音樂,做爲旋律歌詞題材的多元發展。本文主旨在於探討新教再度入臺最初百年期間(1865-1965),詩歌吟頌內容的世界音樂元素。藉著錄音技術的發明與改進,「世界音樂」的議題,自上個世紀盛行於美國之後,各國陸續展開對西歐以外地區音樂的好奇與探索。若以世界音樂爲視野的主體,重新回顧臺灣基督新教的詩歌內容,不難發現,其實在基督新教音樂傳來臺灣的初期,旋律與歌詞的來源,就已經很「世界」了。在這些傳統歐美基督新教音樂中,除了普遍流傳的英、美詩歌之外,來源還包括瑞士旋律、荷蘭傳統音樂、愛爾蘭古調、蘇格蘭傳統音樂、波蘭聖誕頌歌、希伯來旋律、印度歌調,及蓋爾(Gaelic)詩篇等等。過去在研究臺灣基督新教音樂時,直覺的以文本提及的詩歌來源爲統計基數,測定臺灣基督新教詩歌多來自「歐美」。實質上不僅「歐」、「美」音樂隔洋相對;其次,即便是源於「歐」者,也各有各的細部特色。本文首先將探討世界音樂的界定,與其在基督新教的應用,並針對以上提及的各區域詩歌,探討其起源與發展,以及它們在臺灣基督新教音樂中的應用。

英文摘要

Since 1865, Western Protestant Church Music has been disseminated in Taiwan for 140 years. In this period, melodies, words and themes of the music have been transferred from the early British and American Hymnal body to up-to-date all kinds of music in Southeast Asian countries. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the world musical elements of Church Singing from 1865 to 1965, the first hundred years after Christian introduced to Taiwan.Through the inventive and advanced techniques in recording, issue on ”World Music” has been widely explored in those areas outside Western Europe due to people's curiosity after its popularity in the United States in 20th century. If we take this World Music as main body to review the contents of Christian Psalm in Taiwan, you can easily find that the sources of the melodies and words can be regarded as ”World Music” already when its reach to Taiwan in the early time. In addition to the trend of British and American Psalms, traditional Protestant Church Music in Europe and America is composed of the sources from Swiss Melody, Dutch traditional music, Irish traditional music, Scottish traditional music, Old Polish Carol, Hebrew melody, Indian Air and Gaelic Psalm and so on.In the past, while studying Christian music in Taiwan, we simply take the sources of Church Hymnal, mentioned in this paper, as statistic index, and indicate the Christian Psalm in Taiwan stemmed from Europe and America the most. However, music in these two areas is geographically apart by an ocean; moreover, if the music were rooted from Europe, all sorts of European details and features should be concluded. In this paper, we would like to define the scope of World Music and its applications in Christian in Taiwan in the very beginning, and then focus on the Psalms said in the above areas, discuss their sources and development, as well as their applications in Christian music in Taiwan.
