After World War Ⅱ, a symphony orchestra named ”Shan-You” was founded in southern Taiwan. It was originally a chamber ensemble consisting of several musical amateurs, but later developed into a much larger chamber orchestra of 40-50 musicians and was renamed the Shan-You Symphony Orchestra. The 1950's was a period when music teachers, music scores, instruments, and practice rooms were scarce. Three leaders of the orchestra, Dr. Yin-He Su, Sen-Chi Lin, and Chao- Ming Cheng taught young members, made copies of handwritten notes, repaired instruments, and arranged concerts in Tainan County and toured in other cities. Western classical music such as the symphonies of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert were introduced to southern Taiwan at that time. This orchestra was maintained for 10 years and was a highly significant influence on Taiwanese music life during the 1950's. |
