Cold Mountain is an award-winning novel by Charles Frazier which uses the American Civil War as the historical background. After its publication in 1997, it generated much interest among scholarly and movie circles, including a roundtable discussion. The novel, set in the Cold Mountain area of the Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina, became the subject of a movie (2003) and a new opera (2015). The story depicts the suffering of the people as a result of the war and the difficulty of the male character's return trip from the war. There are numerous references of folk music in the book and much use of folk music in the movie. The introduction of Sacred Harp shape-note a cappella singing in the film has generated great interest among the public. This research studies how folk music is reflected in the life of the mountain people in the novel and how it is adapted into the movie, confirming English scholar Cecil Sharp's (1859-1924) remark in the early 20th century that to the mountaineers ＂singing was as common and almost as universal a practice as speaking.＂
