Each music culture has its own way of creating music, as either an instant improvisation or as a written form. Traditionally, Thai composers based their original sources on pre-existing tunes, either from Thailand or foreign sources. Thus, a new composition would be created through variation techniques, by means of extending or shortening. The goals of this study were to find out: 1) what are the fundamental elements of an original melody; and 2) how the original melody is extended into a double-length melody. The results of the study found that: 1) the fundamental elements of the original melody included---beautiful melody (according to the composer’s view); and drumming patterns; 2) for the writing process the composer will: 2.1) select and set the drum pattern for the original melody and determine the main note (the last note of each drumming pattern) to be retained at the end of each phrase (each drumming pattern) of the extended version. Each drumming pattern is counted as one phrase of the melody. A drumming pattern or a phrase of the melody for a sam chan version is in double length of the song chan version; 2.2) The composer will augment the melody into a larger scale, adding more notes and ornaments depending on his or her skill.
