Alma Maria Mahler-Werfel (née Schindler) was a Viennese composer of the late 19th century, throughout her life, inseparable from art. Widely connected, she became the muse of numerous artists. Not only did she influence others in the realm of art, but Alma also used music to express her own views on art. Her published works primarily consist of art songs. With only piano and vocals at her disposal, Alma continually challenged the possibilities of tonal music, achieving a wealth of musical compositions comparable to those of male composers. This article will focus on Alma as a composer and her work Fünf Lieder, examining how she continued to express herself through music despite her identity as a woman. |
