傳統的資料庫對於查詢的處理能力有限，使用者必須明確知道他自己想查詢的項目是什麼，也必須瞭解資料庫的結構。若找不到資料，也無法知道為什麼－是真實世界中本來就不存在這種資料，還是他不會問問題。本研究探討這相關領域的研究－合作問答、鄰近查詢問答、關連查詢問答、放鬆問答等並整合其他智慧型查詢之研究的觀念；在傳統的關連式資料庫上提出一個智慧型資料庫查詢系統架構，包含一些預建的知識（（1）資料字典、（2）延伸資料字典－含概念樹與專有名詞、（3）資料抽象化觀念、（4）企業法則、（5）主題樹、與（6）對使用者的了解），來對使用者提供更有幫助的查詢問答協助，以驗證架構之可行性。最後，並以一個大學資料庫為應用領域之例，用VB 6.0建立一個雛形系統。
