為提高蕎麥單位面積產量及縮短生育日數，於1992年引進6個蕎麥族羣進行特性觀察，結果發現茨城在來具有半矮性、早熟及大粒特性，於是利用混合選種法選出普通種蕎麥品系94－T5，參加1995年～1997年新品系比較試驗，由於農藝性狀表現優越，以臺中選12號參加1997～1998年新品系區域試驗，並於1999～2001年進行新品系栽培試驗、品質檢定及抗病蟲性狀檢定。因本品系具有半矮性、早熟、大粒、成熟期較一致及產量穩定等特性，於2008年1月15日獲准命名為臺中3號推廣之。

In order to improve the productivity and shorten the growth period of buckwheat in Taiwan, 6 varieties of buckwheat were introduced during 1992. In observation trials, the variety Ibalaki Zairai showed superior agronomic traits, especially early maturity to other varieties tested. A line 94-T5 was selected through mass selection procedure and joined new lines comparison trials during 1995-1997. Due to the supreme agronomic performance and early maturity of this line, it was designated as Taichung Selection No. 12 and further put in new lines regional trials during 1997-1998. Cultivation method experiment, quality determination and pest resistant tests were subsequently conducted during 1999-2001. The line is early matured, short straw, large grain size, uniform maturation, and stable yield. The grain crude protein, crude fat, crude fiber and ash of this line were also higher than that of the Taichung No. 1. The line was approved and registered as Taichung No. 3 in January 15, 2008 to extend to farmers.
