Purposes: Based on the perception and action concept in the ecological theory, the main purpose of this study was to investigate whether the elementary students can formalize affordance via visual information and individuals' skill to adopt the external condition. Secondary objective was to examine the extent in which the environmental constraints (verbal instruction) affects the elementary students' direct perception on vertical jumping. Subjects: Ten 6th grade elementary students in Taoyen County were selected as subjects based on their vertical jumping performance being on the top two in each of their classes, and randomly assigned into two groups(with and without verbal instruction groups). Five students were assigned to each of group and there was no significant differences on vertical performance between two group, indicating the homogeneity for both group. Results: 1). There was no significant difference on perceived height between two groups. 2). There was a significant difference between on perceived height and achieved height in the group without verbal instruct, showing the objection to affordance. 3). There was no significant difference between on perceived height and achieved height in the group with verbal instruction, showing the support to direct perception of affordance. 4). With the manipulation of verbal instruction, there was no significant difference between on perceived height and achieved height in the group with verbal instruct, proving the robustness of direct perception of affordance. Conclusions: The robustness of direct perception of affordance was not tally consistent in this study. More restricted external validity control may be needed. One subject at a time could eliminate the potential external confront factor Future work on gender, task, age effect are suggested for further understanding for motor performance. |
