Artificial intelligence is invariably one of the most powerful technologies that has already begun to shape the human society. As the world eases into normalcy after the pandemic, Pope Francis invites the world to prepare the future. Acknowledging the importance of technology, especially AI, he calls for an ethical development of AI that is focused on common good. Taking Pope's invitation to heart, the Vatican departments organized three major events on AI, culminating in a declaration "Rome Call for AI Ethics" signed by the Holy See along with IBM, Microsoft, FAO and digital ministry of Italy. This article after a brief overview of Catholic Church's view on technology, discusses on the contribution of the Catholic Church on AI ethics through these events and comments specifically on the significance of the "Rome Call for AI Ethics" declaration. This article further proposes that the Catholic Church needs to go beyond this declaration and play a prophetic role through her educational, health-care and social institutions to ensure that AI serves the whole humanity.
