Purpose: To investigate the training effects of Tai Chi Chuan on proprioceptive system (tactile acuity, strength adjustment) and muscular performance (isokinetic strength and power). Methods: Thirty-two young healthy participants were randomly assigned into Tai Chi group (8 males, 8 females) and control group without training (8 males, 8 females). Tai Chi group performed Wuji pylon stance, single-form, and combination training of Tai Chi Chuan three times per week for 8 weeks. Proprioceptive system and muscular performance were measured before and after training. Tactile acuity of middle foot of the dominant leg was measured by using a Lafayette instrument two-point aesthesiometer. Strength adjustment and isokinetic strength of the dominant leg knee extensor were assessed by a Biodex isokinetic dynamometer. Vertical jumps was measured by using an AMTI force plate. The paired t-test t was used to compare the difference between pre- and post-training, and the independent t-test was used to compare the difference of the changing rate between two groups. The α level was set at .05. Results: After 8 weeks of Tai Chi Chuan training, the Tai Chi group significantly improved tactile acuity and strength adjustment (p < .05). The changing rate of strength adjustment in the Tai Chi group was significantly better than the control group (p < .05). However, the isokinetic strength of knee extension and vertical jump showed no significant difference between pre- post-training and groups. Conclusion: An eight-week Tai Chi Chuan training program improves tactile acuity and force sense but in muscular strength and power.
