Science evolved during the 17th century and the basics on physics dealing with solid mechanics and fluid mechanics are well established simultaneously followed by electromagnetism. These sciences are expressed parametrically in the form of differential and integral equations. They paved way for development of useful products for mankind (industrial revolution). In the absence of computers, exact science could not be realized in designs. The problems in design became acute once a rotating machine arrived in the form of Laval impulse turbine towards the end of 19th century. To enable larger capacity and higher efficiency machines, approximate methods and testing were developed in design of machines. They formed the backbone for engineering education. The scenario has changed with the arrival of high speed computers, which brought in a direct Simulation Based Engineering Science (SBES) in place approximate methods. The slide rules and mechanical calculators were replaced in favor high performance computing (HPC). Industries quickly adopted these new tools for design aborting century old approximate methods. However, engineering institutions have changed little in the basic subjects. There is an urgent need to abandon approximate method approach of instruction in the basic core and adopt Science to Engineering Approach directly. This paper outlines this approach. |
