This paper presents the development of a mathematical model of a gear set. The model includes the effects of actuation, the loads, the changing tooth stiffness, and the changing friction between tooth flanks during engagement. Friction between the tooth flanks generates an alternating nonsymmetrical periodic function that depends on the relative sliding velocity and the behaviour during the Hertz contact. The actuation of the system is modelled for different sources and the tooth stiffness is designed by considering of: ‧ single and dual tooth contact during engagement, ‧ change of conditions during the line-of action, ‧ tooth flanks' surface conditions, and ‧ behaviour during the lubricated Hertz contact. Friction relationships during tooth engagement are analysed and explained and then incorporated within the mathematical model as an additional mechanism of system excitation. |
