An original method to introduce cost-efficient lightweight design in transmission engineering is being studied here. This method is predicated on the implementation in series-production cars of a real-time and on-line lifetime monitoring system able to predict the remaining service life of transmission gearwheels, continuously and under operating conditions. The purpose is to develop a simple and application-oriented method, which could serve as an input for safety functionalities or transmission development. The system is intended to monitor the loads within a transmission with the aid of a torque identification and to accumulate the resulting partial damages at each calculation step. This paper proposes a model-based qualitative and quantitative study of realistic load cases and their impact on a damage calculation. Owing to these investigations, specification requirements are presented. An observer-based method for reconstructing the torque is also addressed and a global error study for a potential implementation in vehicles is introduced. |
