In this study, friction characteristic of Magneto-rheological (MR) fluid with additives known as nano-diamond powder is evaluated under reciprocating condition. Such additives are used to enhance the friction characteristic. The additives of different percentages of 1,3, and 5 by mass is added to MR fluid and the tests for friction evaluation are carried out. The particles in MR fluid with additives are observed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) after tests and the surface roughness are also measured to compare the effect of additives with different percentages by mass. The results show that friction characteristic of MR fluid is improved when additives are added. However, the most improved friction characteristic of MR fluid is obtained with 3Wt% of additives. The results indicate that the friction characteristic of MR fluid is not proportional to the percentage by mass of additives.
