A subassembly indexing method based on the fastening-connection relationship is presented as an alternative to the time-consuming substructure retrieval algorithm. Based on parts constituting the fastening-connection relationship as the central parts, an assembly topological hierarchical model substructure has been devised. With the functional surface-type strings express parts, and with assembly-place constraint symbols, matching relationship symbols and assembly joint-element-type symbols expressed as the assembly relationships among parts, a coding method of the assembly topological hierarchical model substructure is suggested. By eliminating impossible candidate mappings through the inclusive comparison of structural codes in a bid, establish the correlations among the parts of possible candidate mappings to match substructures with one another and ultimately achieve the structural indexing of assemblies. Finally, The method is validated by taking shaft assemblies of bevel gear cantilever support as example.
