The Moderating Effect of Changes in Strategic Emphasis on the Relationship between Technology Diversity and Innovation Value

以往研究技術多樣性與創新價值間關係的文獻忽略企業在將技術商業化的過程中仍可藉由改變資源配置策略以回應環境變遷。本研究加入策略轉折，探討策略轉折對技術多樣性與創新價值間的調節影響。依據文獻，首先區分技術多樣性為廣泛與核心技術多樣性，並以改變資源配置衡量策略轉折，每年專利數量產出除以總資產衡量企業所創造的價值、Tobin's Q衡量企業所擷取的價值研究。進一步收集2000~2003年台灣資訊電子業企業縱橫資料，進行迴歸（panel data regression）分析。結果顯示，當企業所擁有的技術領域越集中（核心技術多樣性高），策略轉折幅度越大（降低研發費用或增加廣告費用），降低企業創造價值，但增加企業擷取價值；當企業所擁有的技術領域越分散(廣泛技術多樣性高)，策略轉折幅度越大（降低研發費用或增加廣告費），降低企業創造價值，但對無顯著提升企業擷取價值。

Previous studies which discuss a relationship between technology diversity and innovation ignore that in the process of technology commercialization, firms change resource allocation to strategically adapt to environmental changes. This study argues that changes in strategic emphasis (△SE) moderate the relationship between technology diversity and innovation. Following previous studies, this study calculates firms' broad technology diversity (BTD) and core field diversity (CFD); uses changes in resource allocation to measure △SE; uses numbers of granted patent divided by assets to measure value the firm create; uses Tobin's Q to measure value the firm appropriate. By regressing 56 panel data observations of Taiwan information and communication technology firms during 2000-2003 , the results show when a firm's technologies are concentrated (high CFD), decreasing R&D expenditure or increasing Advertising expenditure (increasing △SE) decreases value the firm creates but increases value the firm appropriates; conversely, when a firm's technologies are broadly diverse (high BTD), decreasing R&D expenditure or increasing Advertising expenditure (increasing △SE) decreases value the firm creates but insignificantly influences on value the firm appropriates.
