1923年（日大正12年）4月22日，當時身兼日本帝國攝政重任的裕仁皇太子從高雄前往屏東市巡視。當時南臺灣的天氣相當炎熱，當日正午屏東市的氣溫，在屋內有90℉（32.2℃），在屋外更高達120℉（48.9℃）。探究其原因，發現夏天若太平洋海面上的高壓脊指向臺灣南方，亦即屏東吹南南東至東南風，其氣流過山沉降，有小焚風的感覺，會是屏東平原經常出現高溫的天氣類型。然而，在媒體報導中，行程滿檔又穿著白色長袖海軍正裝巡視屏東的裕仁皇太子，並沒有因為如此的酷暑高溫而感到吃不消，反而是神色自若地欣賞著所到之處的稀有風光。

On April 22, 1923, Crown Prince Hirohito who was serving as the regent of the Japan Empire went to visit Pingtung from Kaohsiung. The weather that day in the southern Taiwan was very sultrily. The temperature that day was 90℉ (32.2℃) indoors and up to 120℉ (48.9℃) outdoors at noontime in the Pingtung city. We explored its causes and found that in summer, if the Pacific high-pressure ridge pointed to the southern Taiwan, there will be south-south-east to southeast winds in Pingtung. The air current from Pacific flowed northwestern over the mountain and then the downdraft will cause the Foehn in the Pingtung plain. This was the common weather type for the Pingtung plain to yield high air temperature. However, in the report of media, the prince regent Hirohito, who had a full schedule in Pingtung with white long-sleeve naval uniform seemed to feel unperturbed under the sultry weather and enjoyed the extraordinary scenery where he visited instead.
