Although the artistic form differs from the novel to the movie, the storyline in the movie is based on the novel, with certain added changes. Besides the manifestation, both in the subject, narrating, aspect and structure all have the similarity. After these changes have been made, the most important thing is that the movie still keeps the original style of the novel, while presenting the story somewhat differently. In order to produce a good movie, one has to take advantage of all the possibilities that the film format allows, such as lighting and sound, while still keeping the original storyline from the novel intact. In addition, the target audience must be able to interpret the movie; otherwise, it willlose its significance. This is especially important if the audience is of a different culture that the originating work that the movie is based on, and the most important task of the director is to make sure that audience members from different cultural backgrounds understand the meaning of the film by using universally understood imagery. This article compares the novel Crouching tiger, hidden dragon by Wang Dulu with the movie of the same name directed by Ang Lee, and discusses the similarities and differences between the two. In the article, we present the audience' s different reaction to the movie. This is done with a Taiwanese audience, a Chinese audience and also an American audience. Furthermore, we discuss Chivalric fiction novels in order to observe the dual presentation methods of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Gragon between the chivalric fiction novel and the chivalric movie. |
