在過去的十幾年間，微創心臟手術逐漸地篷勃發展。部份原因是由於傷口小，復原快及疼痛輕的好處，創造了微創心臟手術的需求。各式各樣的微創心臟手術包括：二尖瓣微創手術、冠狀動脈微創手術、主動脈瓣微創手術、經導管式二尖瓣夾(MitraClip)及經導管式主動脈瓣置換術(transcatheter aortic valve implantation, TAVI)等。然而，在這些手術當中，仍然有著不同的適應症及可能的相關併發症。因此，客觀地選擇微創手術或傳統手術，應用在不同的病人身上，這才是目前最重要的課題。
