短牙弓(shortened dental arch)是在1980年代漸漸發展出來的治療理念,認為重建牙弓中的所有牙齒並非必要,若能將兩側後牙重建到足夠的咬合關係,也能提供足夠的咀嚼功能。在後續的研究中,發現雖然剩餘牙齒會有一定程度的是硬性移動,但可以維持長時間的穩定。咀嚼功能方面效率會降低,但在食物選擇及營養攝取上與完整牙弓沒有差異。顳顎關節障礙的情形並不會因為大臼齒缺失而上升。在 復治療方面,活動假牙僅對大臼齒喪失後的族群有顯著改善,但若能以固定假牙將兩側皆重建至第二小臼齒,病人就可以有足夠的咀嚼功能並維持生活品質。
