胸腔鏡手術經過三十年的發展，於最近二十年內開始，不少外科醫師開始進行單孔胸腔鏡的手術，並將手術的適應症從簡單的周邊肺結節切除，拓展到包含全肺切除、袖式重建手術等複雜且高難度的術式。除了手術傷口的變化之外，亦有外科醫師針對麻醉、術後管路照護等做出創新。單孔胸腔鏡手術是否為患者帶來更多的好處，也有許多文獻進行探討，甚至進行臨床試驗。
