目前嬰幼兒的飲食建議中，母乳被認為是最佳的營養來源，而在兒童牙科中，我們發現許多餵食母乳的孩子患有早期嚴重兒童齲齒，回顧文獻後發現，母乳中確實有某些蛋白質可以預防齲齒，但是母乳中的高乳糖比例以及一些不良的餵食習慣仍能會導致齲齒，以目前文獻資訊並沒有指出餵食母乳與齲齒有直接關係，因此嬰幼兒的牙齒保健建議是長出第一顆乳牙或是一歲前就帶到牙科檢查以及飲食保健諮詢，才能讓孩子遠離齲齒。
